I am a niche magazine publisher. My print circulation is at 20,000 and you can read back issues on the web…you might have to download a pdf, or go to a site that has flash, but if you want to see them, they are available…and they are free.
I have 2 iphone apps. One is very simple that started out at 99 cents. Three months later, we dropped the price to free and have watch demand grow.
My new app will be free as well. And for the record, when I get onto the iPad, I want my magazine to be free there too.
Here's where I think the iPad will benefit me: if we get into a situation whereby 10,000 people are downloading the free magazine on the iPad, then I will reserve the right to lower the number of copies that I publish. So, by giving away the issue, I actually cut my costs and those who normally wouldn't get the issue, now get a chance to enjoy it.
You are correct: publishers ARE greedy…and they are being short sighted.
